Overview
Solanum lycopersicum 'Stupice' is Stupice tomato (pronounced 'STOO-pee-chay'), an indeterminate heirloom growing 36-48 inches (90-120 cm) tall on stakes or cages — more compact than large beefsteak types. Small to medium round red fruit 2-3 ounces (55-85 g) with a rich tangy flavor, maturing in 52-60 days from transplant — one of the earliest-maturing heirloom tomatoes. Bright yellow flowers in clusters. In the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Originated in the former Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic). Cold-tolerant for a tomato: sets fruit at lower night temperatures than most cultivars (below 55°F / 13°C) — valued in short-season and cool-climate gardens. Heirloom (open-pollinated) — seed can be saved. Indeterminate growth but more compact than 'Brandywine' or 'Cherokee Purple.' Start indoors 6 weeks before last frost. No hybrid disease resistance. All green parts contain solanine — toxic to pets and humans in quantity. Ripe fruit is non-toxic. Full sun (6+ hours). Tender annual. Growth rate is fast.
