Rubus tuberculatus
Ruderal Corylifolian
Overview
Rubus tuberculatus is a bramble in the rose family, one of the many microspecies within the blackberry aggregate (Rubus fruticosus agg.) and placed in the section Corylifolii. Like other brambles it is a scrambling, semi-deciduous shrub with arching, prickled stems, or canes, that root at the tips where they reach the ground and form thickets. The compound leaves usually have three to five toothed leaflets, green above and paler beneath, carried on prickly stalks. From early summer it bears clusters of five-petalled white to pale pink flowers about 0.8-1.2 inches (20-30 mm) across, followed by clustered black, juicy fruits of the blackberry type. As a member of the Corylifolii, it tends to have broad leaflets and comparatively few prickles, and it reproduces largely without cross-fertilisation, so its features stay constant from plant to plant. It grows on hedge banks, woodland edges, rough grassland, and waste and disturbed ground, tolerating a wide range of soils in sun or partial shade. Its arching, rooting canes let it spread into dense, thorny stands that can crowd out lower plants.
Native Range
Part of the blackberry complex native to Europe, with this microspecies recorded mainly in Britain and neighbouring areas of north-west Europe. It grows in lowland hedgerows, woodland margins, and disturbed ground.Suggested Uses
Grown or tolerated in wildlife hedgerows, boundary thickets, and informal screening, and valued for its blackberry fruit. The dense, thorny growth shelters nesting birds and small animals, and the flowers and fruit feed insects, birds, and mammals. It suits wild margins rather than tidy borders. How to Identify
