Juncus kraussii
sea rush
Overview
Juncus kraussii is an evergreen, clump-forming rush growing 1.5-4 feet (0.5-1.2 m) tall and spreading 1.5-3 feet (0.5-0.9 m) wide from a short rhizome. The plant forms dense tussocks of stiff, cylindrical, dark green to grey-green culms that taper to sharp, rigid points. True leaves are reduced to basal sheaths, so the upright culms carry out most photosynthesis. Brown to reddish-brown flower clusters appear in a tight, branched head set to one side near the culm tip, usually in spring and summer. Seed is held in small capsules and shed close to the parent plant. The species grows in saline and brackish coastal wetlands, estuary margins, and saltmarsh, tolerating periodic inundation and salt spray that few rushes withstand. It grows in waterlogged clay through to sandy soils and accepts seasonally dry periods once roots are deep. The rigid sharp culm tips can be hazardous in high-traffic areas, and the slow spread makes it a poor choice where quick cover is needed. In garden settings it holds soil on pond and channel banks and forms vertical structure in rain gardens and bioretention basins.
Native Range
Juncus kraussii occurs around the coastlines of eastern, southern, and southwestern Australia, with related subspecies in southern Africa and New Zealand. It grows in estuarine saltmarsh, brackish swamp, and the upper margins of tidal flats.Suggested Uses
Used in coastal and estuarine revegetation, saltmarsh restoration, and erosion control on tidal banks. Planted in rain gardens, pond margins, and bioretention basins for vertical structure. Spaced 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) apart for dense cover. How to Identify

Care Guide
Juncus kraussii grows in full sun in wet, saline, or brackish soils, from waterlogged clay to coastal sand. It tolerates tidal inundation, salt spray, and seasonal drying once established, though growth slows in extended drought. Plants accept a wide pH range from about 6.0 to 8.5 and need no fertilizer in fertile estuarine soils. In cultivation it suits pond edges, bog gardens, and constant-moisture bioretention areas in roughly USDA zones 8-11. Division of established clumps in spring is the usual method of propagation.Pruning
Clumps can be cut back to about 4 inches (10 cm) in late winter to remove old culms before new growth begins. Plants tolerate this hard renewal every few years. Routine trimming is otherwise unnecessary.Pruning Schedule
