Overview
Juncus bufonius is a small annual rush in the family Juncaceae, forming low tufts of slender, wiry, often branching stems 1–12 inches (2.5–30 cm) tall. Unlike most rushes, which are perennial, it completes its life in a single season. The narrow, channelled leaves are grass-like and mostly basal. The flowers are pale green to straw-coloured, about 0.2–0.3 inch (4–8 mm) long, and borne singly along the upper branches in a loose, repeatedly forked head that often makes up much of the plant. Each flower has six pointed tepals and ripens into a blunt capsule of many tiny seeds. It grows on damp, bare, open ground such as pond and ditch margins, rutted tracks, paths, arable fields, and trampled wet hollows, on soils from sand to clay. As an annual of disturbed wet ground it depends on bare mud and heavy seeding, appearing quickly where water has stood and then receded, and it is crowded out once a closed sward of grasses and perennials develops.
Native Range
Native across most of the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas, on damp open ground. It occurs almost worldwide, from the lowlands to the mountains in many climates.Suggested Uses
Juncus bufonius is not grown ornamentally and is usually treated as a weed of damp, disturbed ground, though it colonises bare wet soil quickly and can help bind the surface. Its seeds are eaten by wildfowl and other birds, giving it some value in wetland and pond-margin habitats. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering runs from May to September, and often longer where the ground stays damp. The small greenish flowers are wind-pollinated and also self-pollinate within the nearly closed tepals. Capsules of many tiny seeds ripen through summer and autumn, and the seeds can survive years in the soil before germinating on bare wet ground.
