Overview

Carex texensis is Texas sedge — among the more practical native lawn-replacement sedges for the southern and southwestern US, growing just 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) tall and 8-12 inches (15-30 cm) wide. Narrow thread-like medium green evergreen foliage — similar narrow texture to C. eburnea but adapted to heat, drought, and alkaline soil rather than cold and limestone. The Texas origin gives extreme heat, drought, and any-soil tolerance. Any light condition from full sun to full shade. Self-sows gently to fill gaps between plants, creating a seamless lawn-like carpet. Can be mowed but rarely needs it at 4-8 inches. The most practical native lawn alternative for zones 6-10 in the South and Southwest — where northern sedges like C. leavenworthii may struggle in heat. Evergreen year-round. Hardy to zone 6.

Native Range

Carex texensis is native to the south-central United States — Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and surrounding states.

Suggested Uses

Used as a native lawn replacement in the South and Southwest (zones 6-10). Among the more practical warm-climate native lawn sedges. Mass plant at 6-8 inch spacing. Any light, any soil, drought-tolerant.

How to Identify

Identified by very narrow thread-like medium green evergreen foliage forming a low (4-8 inches / 10-20 cm) ground cover. The narrow texture, heat/drought tolerance, and southern native range separate this from the northern C. eburnea and C. leavenworthii. The southern lawn sedge.
