Overview

Carex sprengelii is a graceful native sedge of eastern North America, growing 18-30 inches (45-75 cm) tall and 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) wide. Named after German botanist Kurt Sprengel. Medium green narrow arching leaves create a fountain-like form that moves in breeze. Dangling spikelets in late spring add a delicate texture. The arching habit (more graceful and fountain-like than many other sedges) makes this an ornamental native sedge species. Highly adaptable: tolerates full sun to full shade, moist to average soil, and a range of pH levels. The clumping habit (not stoloniferous) stays where planted. Golden-yellow fall color. Hardy to zone 3. A native alternative to non-native ornamental grasses for shade situations. Deer avoid sedge foliage.

Native Range

Carex sprengelii is native to North America, from Quebec south to Virginia and west to British Columbia.

Suggested Uses

Used in woodland gardens, shade borders, along streams, and as a native ornamental grass alternative for shade. A graceful arching native sedge. Rain gardens. Containers (5 gallons / 19 liters).

How to Identify

Identified by a graceful fountain-like arching clump of medium green narrow grass-like leaves with dangling spikelets in late spring. The arching fountain form (more graceful than many sedges) and the long-beaked seed heads are the species traits. Clumping (not spreading).
