Overview
Helleborus niger is an evergreen perennial forming a clump 9-12 inches (23-30 cm) tall and 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) wide from a short rhizome. Leaves are basal, leathery, and pedate with 7-9 dark green leaflets, each leaflet 3-5 inches (8-13 cm) long and toothed toward the tip, carried on stalks 6-10 inches (15-25 cm) long; foliage holds through winter and is replaced in spring. Flowers are borne one or two per stem on scapes 6-9 inches (15-23 cm) tall, opening 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) across with five white petal-like sepals that turn pink and then green as they age over 6-8 weeks. A ring of yellow-green tubular nectaries surrounds 30-60 cream stamens. Seed follicles split in late spring, releasing black seeds 0.2 inch (4-5 mm) long that germinate the following winter. Plants take 2-3 years to reach flowering size from seed, and root disturbance sets them back, with divided clumps often producing no flowers for two seasons. Leaf spot caused by Microsphaeropsis hellebori marks overwintered foliage with black-brown blotches in wet conditions. All parts contain bufadienolide glycosides and protoanemonin, and sap contact causes skin irritation.
Native Range
Native to the eastern Alps and the northern Apennines across southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland, northern Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. Grows in open beech and pine woodland and on limestone scree at 1,000-6,200 feet (300-1,900 m), commonly under deciduous canopy that opens in winter.Suggested Uses

Individual flowers hold 6-8 weeks while changing from white through pink to green, with total display running 10-12 weeks. Snow cover and temperatures below 20F (-7C) flatten open flowers, which lift again as temperatures rise. Drought during the preceding autumn lowers bud count the following winter.
