Overview
Eucalyptus macrocarpa is an evergreen mallee, a multi-stemmed shrub or small tree that reaches 5–13 feet (1.5–4 m) tall and 6–10 feet (1.8–3 m) wide. Stems, buds, and leaves are covered in a waxy, silvery-white bloom. Juvenile and adult leaves are alike: broad, ovate to nearly round, 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) long, stalkless, and often clasping the stem in opposite pairs. Flowers have dense tufts of red stamens 2–4 inches (5–10 cm) across, surrounded by a large, warty, grey bud cap. Woody capsules are 1.5–2.5 inches (4–6 cm) wide and remain on the branches for several years. Growth is moderate at 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) per year. Plants are intolerant of humid summers, wet soil, and heavy clay, and they perform reliably only in dry-summer climates. Seedlings are slow to establish and plants transplant poorly once past the container stage.
Native Range
Native to the semi-arid interior of southwestern Western Australia, growing on sandy and gravelly soils in the northern wheatbelt and Mid West regions.Suggested Uses
Used in dry-climate gardens, rock gardens, and Mediterranean-style plantings, spaced 6–10 feet (1.8–3 m) apart. Cut stems with buds and capsules are used in floral arrangements. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in full sun (8–12 hours) and sandy or gravelly, sharply drained soil with a pH of 6.0–8.0. Hardy to about 20°F (-7°C), equivalent to USDA zones 9–11. Established plants tolerate long dry periods and are watered every 2–4 weeks in summer. Summer irrigation combined with humidity causes fungal leaf and root diseases. Fertilizer is rarely needed, and phosphorus-rich products can damage roots. Container plants require a deep pot with a gritty, free-draining mix.Pruning
Little pruning is required. Light tip pruning after flowering in early summer maintains a compact shape, and cuts are made into leafy wood. Bare old wood does not reliably resprout. Spent capsules are left in place or removed for tidiness.Pruning Schedule
Prune: December–January
