Elymus athericus
sea couch
Overview
Elymus athericus is a vigorous, rhizomatous perennial grass of coastal salt marshes and sea walls, forming spreading grey-green swards 24-51 inches (60-130 cm) tall. It spreads by tough, far-creeping underground rhizomes that bind soft sediment and let it form dense, single-species stands. The stiff, erect stems carry flat or inrolled glaucous leaves with a waxy bloom that limits water and salt loss. From June to August it produces a narrow, two-ranked flower spike 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) long, the spikelets pressed close along the axis and wind-pollinated. The grass occupies the upper and middle zones of salt marshes, brackish banks, sea walls, and the drift line, tolerating tidal flooding and salty soils. By spreading aggressively it often displaces lower-growing marsh plants and reduces marsh diversity. It dies back to the rhizomes over winter and resprouts in spring. Its coarse, invasive growth limits its use to coastal stabilisation rather than ornament.
Native Range
Native to the coasts of Europe and North Africa, from the Mediterranean to the Baltic and the British Isles, where it grows in the upper zones of salt marshes, on sea walls, and along brackish shores.Suggested Uses
Used in coastal defence, salt-marsh stabilisation, and sea-wall planting, where its binding rhizomes hold soft sediment against tides. It suits saline, wet coastal ground rather than borders. It is established from rhizome divisions or seed in restoration schemes rather than as an ornamental grass. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering runs from June to August, with slim, two-ranked green spikes held above the foliage. The flowers are wind-pollinated and lack scent or showy parts. Seed ripens through late summer, though the grass spreads mainly by rhizome rather than seed.
