Overview

Echinacea purpurea 'PowWow Wild Berry' is a compact, heavy-blooming coneflower in the daisy family (Asteraceae) from the PowWow series that grows 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) tall and 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) wide. Deep rose-magenta to wild-berry-purple overlapping ray florets with a dark bronze central cone appear from July through September with continuous reblooming over 10+ weeks. The flower colour is deeper and more saturated than the standard species pink, leaning toward a rich berry-purple that holds without fading through the bloom. The PowWow series traits — first-year bloom from seed, compact habit, and heavy bloom production without requiring deadheading — are shared with 'PowWow White'. 'PowWow Wild Berry' also received All-America Selections recognition. The compact stature and branching habit produce a dense, floriferous plant that fills its space without staking. The deep colour combined with the compact form makes this a top-performing E. purpurea selection for smaller spaces and containers. Dark green, rough-textured foliage. Deer avoid the foliage.

Native Range

The species Echinacea purpurea is native to eastern and central North America. 'PowWow Wild Berry' is from the PowWow series, an All-America Selections winner.

Suggested Uses

Used at the front and middle of borders, in containers of 3 gallons (11 liters) or more, and in mass plantings. The deep berry colour is more saturated than the standard species and pairs with white, yellow, and silver companions. Planting alongside 'PowWow White' produces a coordinated series display. First-year bloom from seed allows annual-style use.

How to Identify

Identified by deep rose-magenta to wild-berry-purple overlapping ray florets on a compact plant 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) tall with heavy, continuous bloom. The deeper, more saturated berry-purple colour separates this from the standard species pink and from 'PowWow White'. The compact, heavy-blooming PowWow series habit is shared with the white sibling.
