Clematis microphylla
small-leaved clematis
Overview
Clematis microphylla is an evergreen woody climber native to southern Australia, scrambling 6-16 feet (2-5 m) through shrubs and over fences by twining its leaf stalks around supports. The leaves are divided into many small, narrow leaflets each 0.4-1.6 inches (1-4 cm) long, giving the foliage a ferny look. The species is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. In spring both carry masses of star-shaped cream to greenish-white flowers about 0.6-1 inch (15-25 mm) across, with four narrow sepals and no true petals. Female plants then develop clustered seed heads tipped with long silvery, feathery plumes that catch the light and persist for weeks, the source of the name old man beard. The plant grows in woodland, scrub, and coastal heath on a range of well-drained soils. All parts contain irritant compounds typical of the buttercup family, and the sap can blister skin. Its scrambling growth can smother small shrubs.
