Cirsium texanum
Texas thistle
South-central United States and northern Mexico
Overview
Cirsium texanum is a spiny biennial or short-lived perennial thistle in the daisy family, native to the south-central United States and northern Mexico, growing 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 m) tall on branched, grooved stems. In its first year it forms a low rosette of deeply lobed leaves; the second year it sends up a flowering stem clothed in alternate, spiny-margined leaves that are green above and thinly white-woolly beneath. From spring into summer the branch tips carry rounded flower heads 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) across, each a dense cluster of rose-pink to purple disc florets above a base of spine-tipped bracts. The heads release wind-borne seeds carried on tufts of pale bristles. It grows in prairies, pastures, roadsides, and open disturbed ground, tolerating heat, drought, and poor soil. The flowers feed many native bees and butterflies, though the spiny foliage and prolific seeding can make it a weed in grazed pastures.
Native Range
Native to the south-central United States and northern Mexico, common across Texas and extending into Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, and Louisiana. It grows in prairies, grasslands, pastures, roadsides, and disturbed open ground.Suggested Uses
Used in native, prairie, and pollinator plantings and wildflower meadows where its nectar and larval value suit naturalistic settings. Its spines and heavy seeding make it less suited to small beds, pastures, or tidy borders. How to Identify
