Artemisia pycnocephala
coastal sagewort
Pacific coast (California to Oregon)
Overview
Artemisia pycnocephala is a low, mounding perennial subshrub growing 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) tall and 2-3 feet (60-90 cm) wide, with soft, silvery-grey foliage. The leaves are 0.5-1.5 inches (1-4 cm) long and finely divided into narrow segments densely covered with short, soft hairs that give the whole plant a felted, pale appearance. Stems are woody at the base and herbaceous toward the tips, forming a rounded cushion. Small flower heads are crowded into dense, rounded clusters along upright stalks in summer and autumn; the heads are yellowish to grey-green and inconspicuous against the foliage. The plant is aromatic, releasing a sage-like scent when the leaves are brushed. It grows on coastal dunes, bluffs, and sandy flats along the immediate Pacific shore. Plants are short-lived, often persisting only three to five years before declining, and tend to open at the centre with age. The silvery colour fades and growth becomes leggy in shade or rich soil, so the species holds its form only in full sun and lean, sandy ground.
Native Range
Artemisia pycnocephala is native to the Pacific coast of North America, from northern California north to Oregon. It grows almost exclusively on coastal dunes and sandy bluffs within reach of ocean spray.Suggested Uses
Used in coastal and dune gardens, rock gardens, and dry borders for silver foliage and texture, spaced 24-36 inches (60-90 cm) apart. Suited to seaside plantings exposed to wind and salt, and to gravel gardens with sharp drainage. The aromatic foliage is generally passed over by deer. How to Identify

Care Guide
Artemisia pycnocephala grows in full sun and sandy, fast-draining soil with low fertility. It tolerates salt spray, wind, and drought once established, and needs little or no summer water in its native coastal climate. Rich soil, shade, or regular irrigation cause loose, leggy growth and a loss of the silver colour. Light shearing in early spring keeps the mound dense and removes winter-worn growth. Plants are short-lived and are often replaced every few years as they open at the centre. Sharp drainage matters in wetter climates, where wet winter soil shortens the plant's life.Pruning
The mound is sheared back by about one third in early spring to remove old growth and keep a dense form. Cutting into bare, leafless wood is avoided, since old wood is slow to resprout. A second light trim after flowering removes spent stalks.Pruning Schedule
