Overview

Yucca guatemalensis (syn. Y. elephantipes) is the spineless yucca — the most popular indoor yucca and the safest, growing 48–96 inches (120–240 cm) indoors in containers. The key distinction from other yuccas: the leaf tips are SOFT and spineless — no sharp terminal spines, making this safe around children and pets (though still mildly toxic if ingested). Wide dark green strap-shaped leaves on a thick woody trunk that develops with age, creating a palm-like architectural silhouette. Native to Central America. Tolerates lower light than most yuccas (though brighter light produces better growth). Extremely drought-tolerant — water only when the soil is thoroughly dry. Can be trunk-chopped (cut anywhere on the trunk) and will resprout below the cut — a useful technique for managing height. Outdoors in zones 9–11, can reach 15+ feet (450+ cm). The 'elephantipes' synonym means 'elephant's foot', describing the swollen trunk base of mature specimens.

Native Range

Yucca guatemalensis is native to Central America — Mexico and Guatemala.

Suggested Uses

Used as an indoor architectural specimen, in offices, lobbies, and as the safe (spineless) yucca for homes with children and pets. The most popular indoor yucca. Outdoors in zones 9–11.

How to Identify

Identified by wide dark green strap-shaped leaves with SOFT, SPINELESS tips on a thick woody trunk. The spineless tips are the key distinction from all other yuccas (which have sharp, dangerous terminal spines). The safest yucca for indoor use.
