Vitis aestivalis
summer grape
Overview
Vitis aestivalis is a vigorous woody deciduous vine climbing 10-35 ft (3-11 m) into trees and over structures by means of forked tendrils. The leaves are broad and rounded, 4-8 in (10-20 cm) across, sometimes three- to five-lobed, with a rusty to whitish woolly coating on the underside that helps identify the species. Small greenish flowers appear in branched clusters in late spring and are followed by hanging bunches of round black grapes 0.3-0.5 in (8-12 mm) wide, coated in a pale waxy bloom, that ripen in late summer and autumn. The bark on older stems shreds in long strips. It grows in dry upland woods, thickets, and along fence lines and forest edges. The vine can climb high into tree canopies and needs sturdy support, and its weight can burden small trees. The grapes are edible and used for juice and wine; the cultivar 'Norton' derives from this species.
Native Range
Native to central and eastern North America, from southern Ontario and New England south to Florida and west to Texas and Kansas. It grows in dry upland forests, woodland borders, thickets, and along fences and clearings.Suggested Uses
Grown on arbors, fences, and trellises for shade and fruit, and in native plantings and wildlife gardens where birds eat the grapes. It is planted against sturdy supports spaced 8 ft (2.4 m) or more apart. The fruit is used for juice, jelly, and wine, and this species is the parent of the 'Norton' wine grape. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Vitis aestivalis grows in full sun to part shade and fruits most heavily with ample sun. It tolerates dry, rocky, and sandy soils better than many grapes and grows at a pH of 5.5-7.0 on well-drained ground. Established vines are drought-tolerant and rarely need watering. A strong trellis, arbor, or fence is needed to carry the mature vine weight. Annual dormant pruning controls size and keeps fruiting wood accessible. It resists several fungal diseases that affect European grapes but can still show downy mildew in wet seasons.Pruning
Prune in late winter while fully dormant, cutting back the previous year growth to a framework of spurs or canes, since fruit forms on shoots from one-year-old wood. Remove excess and tangled growth to keep the vine open and manageable. Summer thinning of shoots improves air movement.Pruning Schedule
