Viburnum lantanoides
hobblebush
Overview
Viburnum lantanoides is a deciduous shrub in the moschatel family, growing 6-12 feet (1.8-3.7 m) tall with a loose, straggling, sprawling habit. Its lower branches arch to the ground and take root where they touch, forming dense thickets that can trip a walker, the trait behind the common name. The broadly oval to rounded leaves are 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) long, heart-shaped at the base, with toothed margins and a finely scurfy underside; they turn deep red to purple in autumn. In spring, flat-topped clusters 3-5 inches (8-13 cm) wide open white, the central fertile flowers ringed by larger, showy, sterile flowers about 1 inch (2.5 cm) across. The flowers give way to flattened drupes that ripen from red to purple-black by late summer. The shrub grows in cool, moist, shaded forests, often beside streams and on north-facing slopes. It needs consistent moisture and cool roots, and it declines in heat, drought, or full sun. Growth is slow, and it is difficult to transplant once established.
Native Range
Native to eastern North America, from eastern Canada and the Great Lakes south through the Appalachian Mountains to Georgia. It grows in cool, moist, shaded hardwood and conifer forests, often along streams and on shaded slopes.Suggested Uses
Grown in shaded native plant gardens, woodland edges, and stream-side plantings where soil stays cool and moist. It suits naturalistic understory schemes beneath taller trees and gives cover and fruit for woodland birds. The autumn foliage and spring flowers extend interest across the seasons. How to Identify
