Sonic Bloom Pink Weigela
Northern China, Korea, and Russian Far East
Overview
Weigela florida 'Bokrasopin', sold under the trade name Sonic Bloom Pink, is a deciduous shrub reaching 4-5 feet (1.2-1.5 m) tall and 4-5 feet (1.2-1.5 m) wide at maturity, with an upright rounded habit. Leaves opposite, ovate, 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) long, medium green, finely serrated along the margins. Flowers tubular-funnelform, hot pink to deep rose-pink with paler interiors, 1.25-1.5 inches (3-4 cm) long, opening in clusters of 3-5 along the previous year's wood. Initial bloom flush in May to early June (zones 5-7) is followed by lighter rebloom waves through summer and into early fall, continuing until first hard frost. Each rebloom flush produces fewer flowers than the spring peak. Growth rate moderate, adding 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) per year. Cold hardy to USDA zone 4 (-30°F / -34°C); flower bud damage may occur in zone 4 winters with sustained temperatures below -20°F (-29°C), reducing the spring flush. Aphids and weigela scale occur in poorly ventilated plantings; otherwise pest pressure remains low.
Native Range
Weigela florida is native to northern China, Korea, and the Russian Far East, growing in mixed forests and along stream banks at low to mid elevations. The 'Bokrasopin' cultivar was developed in cultivation by Bot Kwekerijen of Belgium and introduced under license by Proven Winners ColorChoice in 2010 (PP21,001).Suggested Uses
Used in mixed shrub borders, foundation plantings, and as informal hedges at 4-5 foot (1.2-1.5 m) spacing. Planted on slopes and in butterfly and hummingbird gardens, where the long bloom period acts as a nectar source from late spring through fall. Suitable for containers of at least 10 gallons (38 L) with adequate drainage; container plants reach approximately 70% of in-ground mature size. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Initial flush in May through early June in zones 5-7, beginning 2-3 weeks earlier in zones 8-9. Rebloom flushes occur in 4-6 week intervals through summer and into early fall, continuing until the first hard frost. Each rebloom flush is approximately one-third to one-half as dense as the initial spring flush. Total bloom period spans 4-5 months in zones 6 and warmer.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Water deeply weekly during the first two growing seasons in the absence of rain. Established plants tolerate moderate drought but bloom intensity decreases during prolonged hot, dry periods. Fertilize once in early spring with a balanced fertilizer at the rate listed on the label; a second light feeding in early summer supports rebloom. Mulch 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm) deep with shredded bark, held back from the trunk. Aphids cluster on tender new growth; lacewing larvae and ladybugs typically suppress populations. Plants live 15-25 years in suitable sites.Pruning
Prune lightly immediately after the spring flush ends in June to remove spent flower clusters and shape the plant. Hard rejuvenation pruning to 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) above the soil line can be performed in late winter on overgrown plants every 5-7 years; the spring flush is reduced that season but rebloom returns by midsummer. Older cultivars of W. florida bloom only on second-year wood, so heavy late pruning eliminates flowers, but the reblooming habit of 'Bokrasopin' tolerates more frequent shaping.Pruning Schedule
