Overview
Scabiosa canescens is gray pincushion flower (hoary scabious), a compact clumping perennial growing 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) tall and 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) wide. Silver-gray finely divided (pinnately dissected) soft-textured hairy foliage. Soft lavender-blue pincushion-shaped flower domes 1-1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm) diameter with protruding pin-like stamens, on slender wiry stems. In Caprifoliaceae (reclassified from Dipsacaceae). The species name 'canescens' means gray-haired — referring to the silver-gray pubescent foliage. Native to the steppes and dry grasslands of central and eastern Europe (Hungary, Romania, Ukraine). Semi-evergreen — the silver rosette persists through mild winters. Five weeks of bloom (June-July). The silver foliage does not tolerate wet winter conditions or high humidity — crown rot and foliage melt in poorly drained soil are the primary limitations. Requires sharp drainage — sandy or gravelly soil. Uncommon in cultivation — limited nursery availability is a practical constraint. Tolerates alkaline soil (pH 6.5-8.0). Deer-resistant. Drought-tolerant once established. Non-toxic. Zones 4-8. Full sun. Growth rate is moderate.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Full sun (6+ hours). Sharp-drained sandy or gravelly soil pH 6.5-8.0. Does not tolerate wet winter soil or high humidity — crown rot. Deadhead for continued bloom. Semi-evergreen silver rosette. Uncommon in cultivation. Deer-resistant. Non-toxic. Zones 4-8.Pruning
Remove spent flower heads to extend bloom. Shear back the foliage mound lightly after bloom (August) to refresh the silver rosette. No other pruning needed. Do not cut back hard — regeneration from old wood is slow.Pruning Schedule
