Potentilla simplex
common cinquefoil
Overview
Potentilla simplex is a low-growing herbaceous perennial reaching 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) tall, spreading by slender, arching stolons that root at the nodes and can extend 12-24 inches (30-60 cm) in a season. Leaves are palmately compound with five toothed leaflets, each leaflet 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) long, oblong with serrated margins, mid-green above and paler beneath. Solitary yellow flowers, about 0.4-0.6 inch (10-15 mm) across, have five rounded petals and 20-25 stamens, borne on thin stalks from the leaf axils. Flowering occurs from April through June, with sporadic later blooms. The plant produces small dry achenes after flowering. Growth is mat-forming but open, with individual stems widely spaced rather than dense. The first flower typically opens from the axil of the lowest well-developed stem node, a trait separating it from similar cinquefoils. Foliage dies back to a basal crown in winter in colder zones. In lawns and disturbed ground the stolons can spread into adjacent beds, and the plant competes with low turf grasses. It tolerates poor, dry soils but flowers less in deep shade.
Native Range
Native to eastern and central North America, from Quebec and Ontario south to Georgia and west to Minnesota and Texas. Grows in dry to moist open woods, fields, clearings, roadsides, and lawns, often in disturbed or nutrient-poor soils.Suggested Uses
Used as a groundcover in naturalized areas, meadow plantings, and woodland edges where its spreading habit fills open ground. Planted on slopes and dry banks for erosion control at 12-18 inch (30-45 cm) spacing. The spreading stolons make it less suited to small formal beds, where it can overrun neighboring plants. How to Identify
