Overview

Polemonium caeruleum 'Snow and Sapphires' is a deciduous perennial reaching 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) tall with a spread of 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) and an upright, clump-forming habit. This variegated cultivar has pinnately compound leaves with 15-27 leaflets, each broadly edged in bright white to cream-white, creating a variegated ladder effect. The blue to sapphire-blue, saucer-shaped flowers 0.8-1 inch (2-2.5 cm) wide appear in terminal clusters in May-June—the flower color is described as slightly deeper blue than 'Blanjou'. Growth rate is moderate. Hardy to zone 4. Similar to 'Blanjou' in form and variegation pattern. Partial shade essential for stable variegation—full sun scorches white margins. Can revert to all-green—remove green shoots promptly.

Native Range

Polemonium caeruleum is native to temperate Europe and northern Asia—from Britain and Scandinavia east to the Urals, Siberia, and Japan—in moist meadows, streambanks, and woodland margins. 'Snow and Sapphires' is a variegated cultivar.

Suggested Uses

Planted in shaded borders or woodland gardens at 12-15 inch (30-38 cm) spacing. White-variegated foliage with sapphire-blue flowers. Similar to 'Blanjou' in performance. Partial shade essential. Remove green reversions. Not suitable for full sun, dry sites, or hot climates.

How to Identify

Distinguished from 'Blanjou' (Brise d''Anjou) primarily by trade name and potentially slightly brighter white (versus cream-ivory) variegation and deeper blue flowers—the two are very similar in garden performance. Distinguished from the species by the white-variegated leaf margins. Distinguished from P. boreale by the much larger size (18-24 inches versus 4-8 inches) and the variegated foliage.
