Pinus brachyptera
Southwestern Ponderosa Pine
Overview
Pinus brachyptera is a southwestern form of ponderosa pine, an evergreen conifer reaching 60-120 feet (18-37 m) tall with a straight trunk and an open, conical to rounded crown. The yellow-green to dark green needles are 5-10 inches (13-25 cm) long, stiff, and borne mostly in bundles of two or three at the branch tips, giving the foliage a tufted look. On mature trunks the bark breaks into broad, reddish-orange to cinnamon plates separated by dark furrows, and the bark and fresh shoots give off a resinous scent often likened to vanilla. The egg-shaped cones are 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) long, reddish-brown, and armed with a small outward-pointing prickle on each scale. Adapted to dry mountain slopes, it withstands drought, cold, and periodic ground fire, with thick bark shielding the trunk. It grows slowly on poor sites and is prone to bark beetles during prolonged drought, which can kill weakened trees.
Native Range
Native to the mountains of the southwestern United States and adjacent Mexico, including Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and west Texas, with related populations across the Rocky Mountains. It grows in open montane forests, typically between 6,000 and 9,000 feet (1,800-2,700 m).Suggested Uses
Used as a large shade and specimen tree in dry-climate and montane landscapes, in windbreaks, and in reforestation and timber stands. Its size and deep roots make it unsuited to small lots or planting near foundations. How to Identify

Bloom Information
As a conifer, Pinus brachyptera bears cones rather than flowers. Yellow to reddish pollen cones release pollen in late spring, usually May to June, while small reddish seed cones appear near the shoot tips. Seed cones take two years to ripen, opening to shed winged seeds in autumn.
