Paeonia californica
California peony
Coastal southern California and Baja California
Overview
Paeonia californica, California peony, is a winter-growing herbaceous perennial of coastal chaparral and scrub in southern California and Baja California, reaching 12–30 inches (30–75 cm) tall. Unlike garden peonies, it follows the wet-winter, dry-summer cycle of its native range: new growth emerges with fall and winter rains, and the plant dies back to a fleshy rootstock by early summer. The blue-green leaves are deeply divided into rounded segments and have a soft, slightly fleshy texture. From winter into spring it bears nodding, cup-shaped flowers 1–1.5 inches (2.5–4 cm) across with deep maroon to brownish-red petals around a cluster of yellow-centered stamens, often partly hidden beneath the foliage. The flowers are followed by large curved seed pods that split to reveal dark seeds. The plant grows from thick, tuberous roots that store water and food through the long dry dormancy. It is found on dry slopes, coastal sage scrub, and chaparral edges, where it disappears entirely in summer. Its short stature and nodding, dark flowers make it easy to miss among shrubs. The roots are sensitive to summer irrigation, which can rot the dormant crown.
Native Range
Paeonia californica is native to the coastal ranges of southern California and northern Baja California, from around Monterey County south into Mexico. It grows in coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and on dry, brushy slopes below about 5,000 feet (1,500 m).Suggested Uses
Used in native California gardens, dry slopes, and chaparral and coastal-scrub plantings that stay unwatered in summer. It suits rock gardens and naturalized settings among drought-adapted shrubs, though its summer dormancy leaves a bare gap.How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs from winter into spring, roughly December through April, during the cool rainy season. The nodding maroon flowers open a few at a time, often facing downward beneath the leaves. Large curved seed pods follow and ripen before the plant goes dormant in summer.
