Overview

Miscanthus sinensis 'Morning Light' is a medium, deciduous, clump-forming ornamental grass reaching 4-6 feet (1.2-1.8 m) tall with a spread of 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 m) and a dense, arching, fountain-like habit. This cultivar is a variegated sport of 'Gracillimus' with very narrow leaves 0.1-0.2 inch (3-5 mm) wide edged with thin white margins and a white midrib, creating an overall silvery-white to platinum appearance from a distance. The leaf edges roll slightly inward, emphasizing the white margins. Reddish-bronze flower plumes emerge in September-October, aging to silvery-white. The foliage turns golden-tan in autumn. Growth rate is slow to moderate—slower than 'Gracillimus' due to the reduced chlorophyll from variegation. Hardy to zone 5. Late flowering—may not bloom in short-season climates.

Native Range

Miscanthus sinensis is native to eastern Asia—Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan. 'Morning Light' is a variegated sport of 'Gracillimus', introduced from Japan.

Suggested Uses

Planted as a specimen or accent in residential gardens at 3-4 foot (0.9-1.2 m) spacing. The silvery-white foliage appearance is the primary feature—visible from a distance where the variegation reads as an overall light tone. Slower growing than 'Gracillimus'. Late or absent flowering in short-season climates. Can self-seed in mild climates (seedlings revert to green). Not suitable for shade or regions where M. sinensis is listed as invasive.

How to Identify

Distinguished from 'Gracillimus' by the white leaf margins and midrib creating a silvery-white overall appearance (versus plain silvery-green). Distinguished from 'Variegatus' by the much narrower leaves (0.1-0.2 inch versus 0.4-0.6 inch) and the finer texture. Distinguished from 'Cosmopolitan' and 'Cabaret' by the narrow (versus wide) longitudinal white striping and the finer texture. The medium fountain-shaped grass with very narrow white-margined leaves creating a silvery-platinum appearance is diagnostic.

Care & Maintenance

Care Guide

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil (pH 5.5-7.5). Hardy to zone 5. Full sun essential for the brightest variegation and upright habit. Slower growing than green-leaved cultivars due to reduced chlorophyll. Tolerates a range of soils. Drought tolerant once established. Cut back to 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) in late winter. Late flowering—may not bloom in short-season climates.

Pruning

Cut all stems to 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) above ground in late February to early March. Leave dried foliage standing through winter.
