Overview

Hosta 'June' is a medium, mounding, deciduous perennial reaching 12–15 inches (30–38 cm) tall with a spread of 24–30 inches (60–75 cm). A sport of Hosta 'Halcyon' from the Hosta Tardiana Group (H. sieboldiana × H. tardiflora), it produces heart-shaped variegated leaves 6–7 inches (15–18 cm) long with golden-yellow to chartreuse centers and irregular blue-green margins. Leaf color shifts through the season: more blue-green tones in spring, increased yellow in the center as temperatures rise, and a deeper gold by midsummer. The leaf substance is thick and slightly corrugated, a trait inherited from the 'Halcyon' parentage. Pale lavender funnel-shaped flowers appear on 20-inch (50 cm) scapes in July, with a bloom duration of 2–3 weeks. Growth rate is moderate. Hardy in USDA zones 3–9. The cultivar was named American Hosta Society Hosta of the Year in 2001. Leaf centers scorch in full hot sun, slug and snail damage can occur despite the thicker leaf substance, and emergence in spring is later than many other hostas.

Native Range

Hosta 'June' is a garden hybrid, a sport of Hosta 'Halcyon' in the Hosta Tardiana Group (derived from H. sieboldiana × H. tardiflora). The genus Hosta is native to Japan, Korea, and northeastern China.

Suggested Uses

Planted in shaded borders, woodland gardens, and containers of 3 gallons (11 L) or larger at 24–30 inch (60–75 cm) spacing. The seasonal color shift from blue-green spring foliage to gold-centered summer foliage extends visual interest from April through September. Combines with Astilbe, Heuchera, Polystichum, and Dryopteris in shaded perennial plantings. Named American Hosta Society Hosta of the Year in 2001. Performance declines in full hot sun (center scorch), dry soils, and gardens with heavy slug pressure where no management is in place.

How to Identify

Identified by a mounded clump 12–15 inches (30–38 cm) tall of heart-shaped leaves 6–7 inches (15–18 cm) long with golden-yellow to chartreuse centers and irregular blue-green margins; leaf substance is thick and slightly corrugated. Leaf color shifts through the season from a bluer spring expression to a gold-centered midsummer expression. Pale lavender funnel-shaped flowers open on 20-inch (50 cm) scapes in July. Separated from its parent Hosta 'Halcyon' by the gold-centered variegation ('Halcyon' is solid blue-green), and from Hosta 'Sum and Substance' by the smaller mound, the blue-green margins, and the heart-shaped rather than cupped leaves.

Produces pale lavender funnel-shaped flowers on 20-inch (50 cm) scapes in July. Bloom duration is 2–3 weeks. Flowers are held above the foliage mound. The variegated gold and blue-green leaves are the principal visual element of the plant through the growing season, with flowers occurring as a summer accent.

Care & Maintenance

Care Guide

Plant in partial to full shade in moist, humus-rich, well-drained loam or clay soil at pH 5.5–7.0. Hardy in USDA zones 3–9. Morning sun with afternoon shade develops the strongest gold-to-blue-green contrast; deep shade produces greener centers with less gold, and full hot sun scorches the gold centers. Emergence in spring is later than many hostas, and care should be taken during early spring cultivation to avoid damaging dormant crowns. Slugs and snails are the principal pest; the thicker leaf substance reduces but does not eliminate feeding damage. Water during dry periods and mulch lightly to conserve moisture.

Pruning

Cut spent flower scapes back to the base after bloom if seed formation is not wanted. Cut all foliage back to the crown after frost browns it in fall, or leave the foliage standing for winter structure and remove in early spring before new shoots emerge.
