Overview
Fossombronia spp. is a genus of small leafy-thallose liverworts in the family Fossombroniaceae, called frillworts for their ruffled appearance. The plants are tiny, usually 0.1-0.6 inch (3-15 mm) long, with a short fleshy stem bearing crowded, broad, wavy-edged leaves that overlap like crumpled frills and lean in one plane. Colour is pale to mid-green, sometimes flushed pink or red at the base. Fossombronia spp. sits between the leafy and thallose liverworts in form, with leaf-like flaps that are not as clearly defined as in true leafy liverworts. The plants grow on bare, damp, often disturbed soil, on path edges, ditch banks, stubble fields, and the margins of pools, frequently appearing after rain and vanishing in drought. Reproduction is by large, ornamented spores formed in rounded capsules raised briefly on short, pale stalks, and the spore surface pattern is the main way to tell the many species apart under a microscope. Many species behave as short-lived pioneers, completing their cycle quickly on bare ground before competitors take over. The frilled, crowded leaves give the genus a soft, crumpled look distinct from other small liverworts.
Native Range
Fossombronia spp. is widespread worldwide, especially in temperate and Mediterranean climates, growing on bare, damp, often disturbed or seasonally wet soil such as path edges, ditch banks, stubble fields, and pool margins. Many species appear after rain on open ground.Suggested Uses
Fossombronia spp. is of interest mainly to bryologists and is used in the study of liverwort diversity and spore structure. It appears spontaneously as a pioneer on bare garden soil, seed trays, and pot surfaces. The genus indicates open, seasonally damp, disturbed ground. How to Identify
Appearance
Bloom Information
Liverworts do not flower. Fossombronia spp. reproduces by large, sculptured spores formed in rounded capsules raised briefly on short, pale stalks, mainly after wet periods. Many species are short-lived pioneers that produce spores quickly on bare ground.
