Overview
Hylocomium splendens is a feather moss forming loose, spreading mats on the forest floor, over rotting logs, and on humus in cool temperate and boreal regions. Each shoot grows in distinct yearly tiers, adding a new frond-like layer above the previous one in a stair-step pattern that gives the moss its common name. The main stems are red-brown and the much-divided, overlapping leaves are yellow-green to olive, glossy when dry. Individual shoots reach 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) tall, and colonies spread laterally to cover wide patches of ground. Reproduction is by spores released from reddish capsules that ripen on curved stalks, and by fragmentation of shoots. Native across the Northern Hemisphere, it is abundant in coniferous forests, on heathland, and in tundra, where it forms a major part of the ground layer and insulates the soil. H. splendens grows in shade to partial shade and needs consistently moist, humid conditions; it dries and becomes brittle during drought, reviving when moisture returns. It does not tolerate heavy foot traffic or prolonged direct sun.
Native Range
Native across the temperate and boreal Northern Hemisphere, including North America, Europe, and northern Asia. Common in coniferous and mixed forests, on heaths, and in arctic and alpine tundra.Suggested Uses
Used in shaded moss gardens, woodland plantings, and terrariums, and as a groundcover over moist, acidic soil where turf grasses fail. It is also gathered as a floral and horticultural packing material. How to Identify

Bloom Information
As a moss, the species produces no flowers. Spore capsules develop on short red stalks and ripen in late spring to summer, releasing spores when the lid drops. Capsule production is intermittent, and many colonies spread mainly by shoot fragmentation.

Care Guide
Hylocomium splendens grows in partial to full shade in cool, humid sites with steady moisture and acidic, humus-rich substrate. It draws water and nutrients directly through its leaves rather than from roots, so clean air and reliable humidity matter more than soil fertility. The moss withstands cold winters and northern climates and needs no winter protection. It dries and goes dormant in drought, then revives when rewetted. Foot traffic, deep leaf litter, and prolonged direct sun damage the mats. No fertilizer is needed.Pruning
No pruning is required. Loose debris and fallen leaves can be lifted off the mat to keep it exposed to light and moisture. Sections can be lifted and relaid to spread a colony.Container Growing
