Overview
Pincushion moss is a non-vascular moss that grows in dense, rounded cushions of pale, glaucous blue-green that fade toward whitish-green as they dry. Individual cushions form low mounds 1-4 inches (2.5-10 cm) high and spread to 4-12 inches (10-30 cm) or more across as they merge into larger colonies. The short shoots are packed tightly and clothed in narrow, awl-shaped leaves that hold water in special clear cells, giving the plant its chalky, frosted look. Like all mosses, Leucobryum glaucum has no true roots, flowers, or seeds; it anchors with thread-like rhizoids and reproduces by spores carried on slender stalks, as well as by fragments that break off and root anew. It grows on acidic, humus-rich ground, sandy banks, rotting wood, and rocks in shaded woodland, holding moisture like a sponge. The cushions can lift away from the soil at the edges in dry spells and need a damp, shaded spot to stay firm and green. Cushions grow slowly and recover slowly if torn, so a colony builds over years rather than seasons.
Native Range
Native across the Northern Hemisphere, including much of Europe, eastern North America, and parts of Asia. Leucobryum glaucum grows in moist, shaded woodland on acidic soils, peat, decaying logs, and rock, often in oak, beech, and conifer forests.Suggested Uses
Used in shade and woodland gardens, moss gardens, terrariums, and dish gardens for its firm blue-green cushions. It carpets shaded ground, rocks, and logs where grass will not grow. The cushions also appear in container and bonsai plantings as a living groundcover. How to Identify

Bloom Information
As a moss, it bears no flowers and reproduces by spores rather than seed. Spore capsules form on slender reddish stalks above the cushions, mainly in autumn and winter where the plant fruits at all. Many garden colonies spread by fragments and rarely produce capsules.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in part to full shade in consistently moist, acidic conditions with a pH from 4.0 to 6.0. It needs no soil in the usual sense and establishes on peat, sand, humus, rotting wood, or rock as long as the surface stays damp. Steady humidity and shelter from drying wind keep the cushions firm and green, while prolonged drought makes them pale, brittle, and loose. It takes no fertilizer, which can burn the delicate shoots, and rainwater suits it better than hard tap water. Pressing cushions firmly onto the surface and misting until they knit down helps them establish. Growth is slow, and torn or compressed cushions are slow to mend.Pruning
No pruning is needed for this slow-growing moss. Fallen leaves and debris are lifted off the cushions to keep light reaching the green shoots and to stop rot. Loose or torn pieces can be pressed back onto damp ground to re-root.Container Growing
