Overview

Leucobryum albidum, white or pincushion moss, is a cushion-forming moss in the family Leucobryaceae, building dense, rounded mounds 0.5-2 in (1-5 cm) tall that spread into patches several inches wide. The narrow leaves are pale whitish-green when dry and turn greener when wet, a color that comes from large empty cells (leucocysts) that store water and air alongside the green photosynthetic cells. The compact cushions hold moisture and can be lifted from the ground in one piece, as the moss anchors loosely rather than rooting. It reproduces mainly by fragments that break off and root anew, and less often by spores carried on slender stalks. The moss grows on dry to moist, acidic, sandy or humus-rich soil, on rotting logs, and on shaded banks in woodland across eastern North America. It tolerates periods of drying by going dormant and reviving when moisture returns. Deep shade with steady humidity suits it, while full sun and alkaline soil exclude it. It resembles the larger Leucobryum glaucum, differing in its smaller cushions and narrower leaves.

Native Range

Leucobryum albidum is native to eastern North America, from Ontario and New England south to Florida and west to Texas. It grows on acidic soils, rotting wood, and shaded banks in deciduous and mixed woodland.

Suggested Uses

Leucobryum albidum is used in shade and woodland gardens, moss gardens, terrariums, and between stepping stones in damp, acidic, shaded spots. Its low cushions form a soft green-white groundcover where grass will not grow. It suits container tops, bonsai plantings, and naturalistic shade designs.

How to Identify

Leucobryum albidum is recognized by its dense, rounded, whitish-green cushions that pale when dry and green up when wet. The narrow leaves and the loosely anchored mounds that lift away in one piece are characteristic. Its smaller cushions and narrower leaves separate it from Leucobryum glaucum.

Leucobryum albidum grows in part to full shade on moist to seasonally dry, acidic, sandy or humus-rich ground and needs steady humidity to stay green. It draws moisture from rain and air rather than from roots, so it is kept damp by misting or shade rather than by deep watering. The cushions tolerate drying by going dormant and reviving when wetted. Alkaline soil, full sun, and foot traffic damage the colonies. Fallen leaves are cleared so they do not smother the cushions. It spreads slowly as fragments take hold on bare, acidic soil.

Pruning

Pruning does not apply to this moss. The cushions can be lifted, divided, and pressed onto bare acidic soil to start new patches. Clearing fallen leaves keeps the colonies open and green.
