Overview
Hypnum cupressiforme is a creeping, mat-forming moss in the Hypnaceae found on a wide range of surfaces, including tree bark, rocks, walls, and soil. The slender stems trail and branch irregularly, forming flat, glossy mats that spread from less than an inch to several inches across. The small leaves, under 0.1 inch (2 mm) long, curve to one side and overlap closely, pressing against the stem in a way that recalls a cypress shoot and gives the species its common name. Colour ranges from yellow-green to deep green and golden brown depending on light and moisture. As a moss it has no roots, flowers, or seeds, anchoring instead by thread-like rhizoids and reproducing by spores released from curved capsules raised on reddish stalks. It tolerates a broad range of conditions, from shade to partial sun and from acidic to neutral surfaces, but dries and browns during prolonged drought, reviving when moisture returns. Widespread across much of the world, Hypnum cupressiforme grows in woodland, heath, and urban settings and is used in moss gardens, terrariums, and on green roofs.
Native Range
Hypnum cupressiforme has a near-cosmopolitan distribution, occurring across Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Australasia. It grows in woodlands, heaths, and grasslands and on walls and roofs in towns.Suggested Uses
Grown in moss gardens, terrariums, bonsai plantings, and on green roofs and shaded walls. The low, mat-forming habit suits ground-level cover in damp, shaded settings. How to Identify
Appearance
Bloom Information
As a non-flowering moss, Hypnum cupressiforme produces no blooms. Spore capsules form on short reddish stalks and ripen mainly in autumn and winter. The lid drops to release spores once the capsule matures.

Care Guide
Hypnum cupressiforme grows on bark, stone, soil, and wood in shade to partial sun and needs no soil, drawing moisture and nutrients from the air and the surfaces it grows on. Steady humidity and occasional misting keep the mats green, while prolonged dryness turns them brown until moisture returns. It tolerates acidic to neutral surfaces and a wide temperature range. In moss gardens and terrariums it is laid on a damp surface and pressed into contact to establish. It needs no fertilizer.Pruning
Pruning is not part of moss care. Mats can be trimmed or lifted to shape a planting or to remove debris that collects on the surface. Brushing off fallen leaves keeps light reaching the moss.Container Growing
