Overview

Echinops spp. is a genus of about 120 species of stout, spiny perennials and biennials in the aster family (Asteraceae), native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. Plants form upright clumps 2–6 feet (0.6–1.8 m) tall on rigid, often white-woolly stems, with deeply cut, spiny-margined leaves 4–14 inches (10–35 cm) long, dark green above and gray-felted beneath. The flower heads differ from most asters in being single-flowered units packed into a spherical head 1–2.5 inches (2.5–6 cm) across, in steel-blue, violet, or white. The globes open in mid- to late summer and draw bees and butterflies. Dried heads hold their shape and color for cutting. Plants grow from a deep taproot that makes established clumps drought-tolerant but hard to move. E. ritro and E. bannaticus are the common garden species. Stems and leaves are sharply spiny, and the deep taproot lets plants self-seed into a long-lived stand.

Native Range

Native to central and southern Europe, the Mediterranean, central and western Asia, and the mountains of tropical Africa. Grows on dry, rocky slopes, steppe, open grassland, and roadsides in well-drained soils from sea level to about 9,000 feet (2,700 m).

Suggested Uses

Grown in sunny borders, gravel and prairie-style plantings, and pollinator gardens, spaced 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) apart. The spherical heads are cut fresh or dried for arrangements. The spiny foliage and deep root suit dry, low-water plantings but make plants hard to move once set.

How to Identify

Recognized by spherical flower heads of steel-blue to violet, 1–2.5 inches (2.5–6 cm) across, held on rigid stems above deeply cut, spiny gray-green leaves with white-felted undersides. Each globe is built from many one-flowered units rather than a single composite head. The round spiny heads and the felted, thistle-like foliage separate Echinops spp. from the true thistles (Cirsium spp.) with their flattened heads.

Rich or wet soil produces floppy stems and shortens the plant's life. The deep taproot makes mature clumps drought-tolerant but hard to divide or transplant. Plants self-seed and can spread into a colony if heads are left to ripen. Aphids gather on stems, and root rot follows wet winter soil. Staking supports tall stems in exposed sites.

Pruning
