Baptisia leucophaea
cream wild-indigo
Overview
Baptisia leucophaea is a low, spreading herbaceous perennial in the pea family (Fabaceae), 12–24 inches (30–60 cm) tall but often wider than tall, with stout stems clothed in soft gray hairs. The blue-green to gray-green leaves are divided into three leaflets, with a pair of large leafy stipules at each node. In spring it produces long flower clusters that lean sideways or trail along the ground rather than standing upright, carrying cream to pale yellow pea-shaped flowers each about 1 inch (2.5 cm) long among large bracts. Inflated, hard-walled seedpods follow and dry to black, holding loose seeds that rattle. It grows on dry prairies, sandy slopes, open woods, and roadsides across the central United States, where its deep taproot lets it survive drought and fire. As a legume it fixes nitrogen through root bacteria. The foliage and seeds contain alkaloids that can poison livestock and people if eaten in quantity. The plant is slow to establish from seed and takes several years to reach flowering size.
Native Range
Baptisia leucophaea is native to the central United States, from the upper Midwest and Great Lakes region south through the Great Plains to Texas and the Gulf states. It grows on dry prairies, savannas, and sandy open ground across this range.Suggested Uses
Baptisia leucophaea is used in prairie restorations, native and dryland gardens, and sunny borders on well-drained soil. It serves as a larval host for several butterflies and supplies spring pollen for bumblebees. Its black seedpods add texture and rattle in autumn plantings. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Cream to pale yellow flowers open in spring, from April into May depending on latitude. The trailing racemes bloom over about 3 weeks, earlier than most prairie wildflowers. Bumblebees are the main pollinators, after which the inflated pods form and blacken.
