Astilbe japonica 'Deutschland'
Deutschland Astilbe
Garden hybrid; {Astilbe japonica} hybrids derived from species native to Japan
Overview
Astilbe × japonica 'Deutschland' is a compact Japanese astilbe hybrid in the Saxifragaceae family that grows 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) tall and wide. Dense, upright panicles of pure white florets appear in June and July above a mound of bright green, glossy ternately compound foliage. The panicle form is intermediate between the open, arching sprays of A. x arendsii and the narrow spikes of A. chinensis — denser than Arendsii types but wider than Chinensis forms. Bright green foliage gives a lighter backdrop for the white flowers than the dark green carried by many astilbe cultivars. 'Deutschland' blooms early in the astilbe season, in June, alongside roses and early-summer perennials. Like all A. japonica hybrids, this cultivar requires consistently moist soil and does not tolerate any drought; leaf edges brown rapidly when moisture drops. The bright green foliage colour fades to a washed-out yellowish tone in full sun even with adequate water. Clumps expand slowly by rhizomes. Division every 3–4 years maintains vigour as the centre becomes woody. The compact size suits front-of-border positions. Deer bypass the foliage.
Native Range
Astilbe × japonica hybrids are derived from A. japonica, a species native to Japan, crossed with other Asian Astilbe species. 'Deutschland' is a long-established cultivar introduced in the early twentieth century.Suggested Uses
Planted at the front of shade borders, along paths, and in containers of 5 gallons (19 L) or more. The early bloom pairs with roses, iris, and early-summer perennials. White flowers brighten dark shade. Suited to mass plantings in groups of 5–7 for a concentrated white display, and to stream margins and rain gardens. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs in June and July, earlier than most astilbe cultivars. Dense white panicles open over approximately 3 weeks. The early bloom timing suits combinations with roses and early-summer perennials. Dried panicles turn tan and persist through winter.Detailed Descriptions

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Site in partial to full shade with 2–6 hours of filtered light. Humus-rich, consistently moist soil is essential. Water regularly and deeply; drought causes immediate leaf browning. Mulch with 2–3 inches (5–8 cm) of organic material. Full sun fades the bright green foliage and is unsuitable for this cultivar. Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring. Fertilization beyond annual mulch is unnecessary.Pruning
Leave dried plumes for winter interest or remove after bloom. Cut all growth to ground level in early spring before new shoots emerge. No other seasonal pruning is required.Pruning Schedule
