Transplant Shock

/TRANS-plant SHOCK/
🧑‍🌾 Cultivation Basic

A period of slowed growth, wilting, leaf drop, or dieback that occurs after a plant is moved, repotted, or planted in the ground. Caused by root disturbance, environmental change, and water stress. Most plants recover within weeks to months. Reducing root disturbance, watering thoroughly, and providing temporary shade help minimize shock.

Etymology

Latin transplantare (to plant again) + Old French choque (a blow)

Example

The tree experienced transplant shock after planting, dropping leaves for the first summer before recovering.
