A substance mixed into the soil to improve its structure, drainage, nutrient content, or pH. Common amendments include comite, perlite, peat moss, lime (to raise pH), and sulfur (to lower pH). Distinguished from fertilizer, which primarily adds nutrients.

From Latin emendare, meaning "to correct, improve."
