Also known as: overwinter perennial
The practice of encouraging plants (especially those considered annual or tender in a given climate) to persist and return for multiple growing seasons. Methods include heavy mulching, overwintering containers in sheltered locations, planting in microclimates, and selecting the hardiest cultivars. In mild climates, many plants that are annual in northern gardens can be perennialized with minimal protection.
Etymology
Latin perennis (lasting throughout the year) + -ize (to make)
Example
“With a thick layer of mulch and a sheltered south-facing position, you can perennialize lantana in zone 7.”
