The practice of removing faded or dead flower heads from a plant to prevent seed formation and redirect the plant's energy toward producing new flowers. This extends the blooming period for many annuals and perennials.

From "dead" + "head" (flower head).

Example

Regularly deadheading roses promotes repeated flushes of blooms throughout summer.
