Overview

Veronica peduncularis 'Georgia Blue' is a widely planted creeping veronica, named for the Republic of Georgia (Caucasus region, not the US state). Plants grow 4–6 inches (10–15 cm) tall and 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) wide. Bright gentian-blue flowers with a small white eye in loose racemes bloom from March through May — a 6-week spring bloom period that runs longer than most early-spring ground covers. The gentian-blue is a vivid, true blue that reads strongly in the early spring garden. Dark green small rounded leaves turn burgundy-bronze in fall and winter, creating a second season of color that many creeping veronicas lack. The three-season cycle — spring blue flowers, summer green mat, fall/winter bronze foliage — gives strong year-round interest from a single ground cover. Well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Deer avoid the foliage.

Native Range

The species Veronica peduncularis is native to the Caucasus region — Republic of Georgia and Turkey. 'Georgia Blue' is a garden selection.

Suggested Uses

Used as a creeping ground cover, along path edges, in rock gardens, and spilling over walls. A widely planted creeping veronica with three-season performance. Container culture for spring blue cascade. Pairs with spring bulbs.

How to Identify

Identified by bright gentian-blue flowers with white eyes on a low (4–6 inches / 10–15 cm) creeping mat that turns burgundy-bronze in fall and winter. The vivid blue-with-white-eye flowers, the very early and 6-week-long bloom (March–May), and the burgundy fall color are the combined signature traits of this widely grown creeping veronica.
