Overview
Alocasia odora is upright elephant ear (night-scented lily), one of the larger Alocasia species and notably cold-hardier than most aroids in the genus. Grows 60-120 inches (150-300 cm) tall and 60-96 inches (150-240 cm) wide. Massive upright glossy green heart-shaped to arrowhead leaves 24-48 inches (60-120 cm) on long stout petioles, held more vertically than the cascading A. macrorrhizos or the horizontal Colocasia taro. The species name 'odora' means 'fragrant', referring to the night-scented inflorescence: a white-cream spathe surrounding a yellow spadix that releases a sweet-spicy fragrance after dark to attract beetle pollinators. Native to tropical and subtropical East and Southeast Asia (Japan to Indonesia). Hardier than most ornamental Alocasia: roots survive zone 7b (-5°F / -21°C) with heavy mulch, though foliage dies to the ground at first frost; in zones 9+, evergreen. Wet to consistently moist soil — wetland-adapted. Full sun to partial shade. All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals — toxic to humans and pets if ingested. Containers of 10+ gallons (40+ liters) for the substantial root system. Growth rate is fast in warm conditions. Zones 7-11 (with winter mulch in 7-8).
Native Range
Native to tropical and subtropical East and Southeast Asia — Japan, Taiwan, southern China, Southeast Asia, and Indonesia.Suggested Uses
Grown in tropical-effect plantings, pondside and rain garden margins, and containers of 10+ gallons (40+ liters). The cold-hardier roots open Alocasia to colder zones than most species. The massive upright leaves give a large-scale tropical look. Toxic to pets and humans — placement away from ingestion-risk locations is recommended. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Wet to consistently moist soil. Full sun to partial shade. Hardy roots to zone 7b (-5°F / -21°C) with heavy mulch — foliage killed by frost but roots resprout in spring. Evergreen in zones 9+. Toxic to pets and humans (calcium oxalate). Containers of 10+ gallons (40+ liters). Zones 7-11.Pruning
Yellowing or damaged leaves are removed at the base. In cold zones (7-8), foliage dies back at frost — dead leaves are cut off and the crown is mulched heavily for winter protection. The plant resprouts from the rhizome in spring.Maintenance Level
