Thalictrum minus
lesser meadow-rue
Europe, North Africa, temperate Asia
Overview
Thalictrum minus is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial 12-60 inches (30-150 cm) tall, variable across its wide range, with wiry stems rising from short rhizomes. The leaves are two to four times divided into many small, rounded to wedge-shaped leaflets 0.2-0.6 inch (5-15 mm) long, blue-green above and paler beneath, resembling those of a maidenhair fern. From June to August it bears airy, branched heads of tiny pendulous flowers that lack petals; each flower is reduced to four small greenish-yellow sepals and a tassel of dangling yellow stamens. The flowers are wind-pollinated, the drooping stamens releasing pollen to the breeze. It grows in grassland, rocky slopes, dunes, and open woodland on calcareous or neutral soils across Europe, North Africa, and much of Asia. The species is highly variable, and many local forms and subspecies have been named. It spreads slowly by rhizome and self-seeds where the ground is open. The divided foliage dies back to the rootstock each winter. Its loose habit and finely cut leaves contrast with the bolder foliage of meadow companions, though tall stems may lean in exposed sites.
Native Range
Native to Europe, North Africa, and temperate Asia. It grows in grassland, on rocky slopes and dunes, and in open woodland, often on lime-rich soils.Suggested Uses
Grown in mixed borders, gravel gardens, and naturalistic meadow plantings for its divided foliage and airy flower heads. It is used among grasses and other perennials in prairie-style schemes. The cut foliage is used in flower arranging. How to Identify
