Overview

Thalictrum aquilegiifolium is columbine meadow rue — named for its blue-green finely divided foliage that closely resembles the leaves of columbine (Aquilegia). Plants grow 24–36 inches (60–90 cm) tall and 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) wide — the shortest commonly grown meadow rue. Fluffy lavender-purple to mauve flower clusters appear in May and June, composed entirely of stamens — the flowers carry no petals, creating an airy, cloud-like effect. The blue-green columbine-like foliage is ornamental from spring through fall. Moist, humus-rich shade suits this species. The shorter stature makes this easier to use in borders than the towering T. delavayi or T. flavum. Mildly toxic if ingested. Deer avoid the foliage.

Native Range

Thalictrum aquilegiifolium is native to Europe and western Asia, from Spain east to Japan.

Suggested Uses

Used in shade borders, woodland gardens, and cottage gardens. The blue-green foliage pairs with hostas, ferns, and astilbes. The shortest meadow rue for front-to-mid border positions.

How to Identify

Identified by fluffy lavender-purple stamen-only flower clusters (no petals) above blue-green finely divided columbine-like foliage. The stamen-only flowers creating airy clouds are the genus signature. The shortest common meadow rue (24–36 inches / 60–90 cm).
