Solidago mexicana
southern seaside goldenrod
Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the southeastern United States and Mexico
Overview
Solidago mexicana, southern seaside goldenrod, is an upright coastal perennial reaching 24–72 inches (60–180 cm) tall, with smooth, somewhat fleshy lance-shaped leaves 2–6 inches (5–15 cm) long that resist salt spray. Stout, often reddish stems rise from a basal rosette and branch near the top into a dense, plume-shaped cluster of small yellow flower heads in fall. Each head is about 0.2 inch (5 mm) wide, and the massed clusters can span 6–12 inches (15–30 cm). The plant grows from a thick, spreading rootstock that anchors it in shifting sand and tolerates brief flooding by brackish water. It is closely tied to dunes, salt marsh edges, and beach flats along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, where few other flowers bloom so late. The smooth, fleshy foliage stores moisture and helps it endure salt and drought, though the tall stems can lean in exposed, windy sites. After bloom the heads ripen into wind-borne seeds with a white pappus. It spreads both by seed and by slow expansion of the rootstock.
Native Range
Solidago mexicana is native to the coastal southeastern United States, from Virginia south through Florida and west along the Gulf Coast to Texas, extending into Mexico and the Caribbean. It grows on dunes, beach flats, and the upper edges of salt and brackish marshes.Suggested Uses
Used in coastal and seaside gardens, dune stabilization, salt-tolerant borders, and pollinator plantings. Its late bloom suits fall color in sandy soils, though its height and spread make it less suited to small, tidy beds. How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering occurs in fall, generally September through November, later than most inland goldenrods. The plume opens its many small heads over several weeks. Seeds with a white pappus follow and scatter on coastal winds.
