Overview

Sedum × 'Vera Jameson' (now Hylotelephium 'Vera Jameson') is a hybrid sedum with a uniquely smoky, romantic color quality, growing 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) tall and 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) wide. The dusky purple to smoky plum-rose rounded succulent leaves on gracefully arching stems have a color quality that is hard to describe — not a clean purple like 'Matrona' or a vivid cherry like 'Cherry Tart', but a muted, smoky, antique-rose-purple that suggests faded velvet or old photographs. Dusty pink to mauve-pink flowers in flat clusters in August and September continue the muted, romantic palette. Named after Vera Jameson, an English gardener who found the plant as a chance seedling. The arching, trailing habit is intermediate between the low creeping sedums and the upright border sedums — 'Vera Jameson' spills and cascades gently at container edges and raised bed tops. The H. telephium × H. cauticola parentage combines the border sedum's substance with the cliff sedum's trailing grace. Lean, well-drained soil in full sun. Deer avoid the succulent foliage.

Native Range

Sedum × 'Vera Jameson' is a garden hybrid (Hylotelephium telephium × H. cauticola), found by Vera Jameson in England.

Suggested Uses

Used at container edges, raised bed tops, wall tops, and in borders where the trailing, arching habit can cascade. The smoky, romantic color palette suits cottage and romantic garden schemes. A bridging sedum between the creeping and border types.

How to Identify

Identified by dusky purple to smoky plum-rose succulent foliage on gracefully arching stems with dusty pink late-summer flowers. The smoky, muted color quality — not vivid or clean but antique and atmospheric — distinguishes this from all other colored sedums. The arching, trailing habit is intermediate between creeping and upright types.
