Overview
'Rozanne' is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial cranesbill hybrid of Geranium (between G. wallichianum 'Buxton''s Variety' and G. himalayense), bred by Donald and Rozanne Waterer in England and introduced in 2000. Plants reach 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) tall and spread 24-36 inches (60-90 cm) wide, forming a low mound with trailing stems that grow into and over neighboring plants. Foliage is medium green, deeply lobed and palmate, 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm) wide, with light marbling between veins. Flowers are 2-2.5 inches (5-6 cm) across, violet-blue with a small white central eye and dark blue veins on each petal. Sterile flowers do not set seed, allowing continuous bloom from late May through first hard frost in zones 5-8 with deadheading. In zones 9 and warmer, summer dormancy may interrupt bloom during peak heat. Plants form a mass that requires no staking; spent stems can be cut back mid-season to refresh foliage. Generally non-toxic to humans and pets in normal contact. Crown rot develops in winter-wet soils with poor drainage.
Native Range
'Rozanne' is a horticultural hybrid with no native range. Parent species Geranium wallichianum is native to mountainous regions of Kashmir, northern Pakistan, and Afghanistan; G. himalayense is native to the Himalayan range from Afghanistan through Tibet and Kashmir. Both parent species occur in moist meadows and forest edges at 8,000-13,000 feet (2,400-4,000 m) elevation.Suggested Uses
Used in mixed perennial borders, slope plantings, ground-level masses, and as a filler around taller perennials at 24-30 inch (60-75 cm) spacing in zones 5-8.
