Rosa 'Special Anniversary'
rose
Garden hybrid (genus native to northern hemisphere)
Overview
Rosa spp. 'Special Anniversary' is a deciduous hybrid tea rose forming an upright, bushy shrub 30–42 inches (75–105 cm) tall and 24–30 inches (60–75 cm) wide. It bears high-centered double flowers about 4 inches (10 cm) across in deep pink to cerise, usually one per stem in the typical hybrid tea form, repeating from early summer until autumn. The blooms carry a light to moderate fragrance. The semi-glossy dark green leaves are carried on stems with thorns. Like most hybrid teas, it flowers in flushes with gaps between, and it can be prone to blackspot, mildew, and rust where air flow is poor or seasons are wet. It is hardy in cool-temperate climates but benefits from winter protection at the coldest end of its range. The upright form and one-bloom-per-stem habit suit cutting but give a more open shrub than cluster-flowered types.
Native Range
Rosa spp. 'Special Anniversary' is a garden hybrid tea rose of cultivated origin and does not occur in the wild. The genus Rosa spp. is native across the temperate and subtropical northern hemisphere.Suggested Uses
Rosa spp. 'Special Anniversary' is used in rose beds, mixed borders, and cutting gardens, and in large containers, spaced 18–24 inches (45–60 cm) apart. The long-stemmed single blooms suit cutting for the vase. Its disease-susceptibility means it needs an open, airy position rather than a crowded bed.How to Identify

Bloom Information
Flowering repeats from early summer into autumn, roughly June to October, in flushes with gaps between. Each flush carries high-centered deep pink to cerise blooms about 4 inches (10 cm) across. Removing faded flowers shortens the gap before the next flush.

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Rosa spp. 'Special Anniversary' grows in full sun and moist, well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. It flowers most freely in full sun with good air movement, which also lowers disease pressure. Like most hybrid teas it can develop blackspot, mildew, and rust in wet seasons or crowded sites, spotting or dropping the leaves. Steady moisture and feeding through the growing season support repeat flowering. A spring mulch conserves moisture and feeds the roots. It is hardy in cool-temperate climates but benefits from a winter mulch over the base in the coldest areas.Pruning
Prune in late winter or early spring while dormant, cutting the main stems back to outward-facing buds at 8–12 inches (20–30 cm) to shape an open framework. Dead, weak, or crossing growth can be removed at the same time. Deadheading spent blooms through summer brings on the next flush.Pruning Schedule
