Overview

Rosa 'Autumn Sunset' is a deciduous shrub to short climbing rose reaching 6-10 feet (1.8-3 m) tall with a spread of 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 m) and a vigorous, upright, arching habit with long canes. It produces clusters of medium-sized, semi-double to double flowers 2.5-3 inches (6-8 cm) wide in warm apricot-gold to peachy-orange, opening from deeper orange buds and fading to softer peachy-cream—a multicolored warm-toned effect. The flowers appear repeatedly from June through frost. The glossy, dark green foliage has above-average disease resistance. Growth rate is fast. Hardy to zone 5. Bred by Loren Liming (1986). A modern shrub rose with the warm color palette of 'Buff Beauty' but in a larger, more vigorous plant. Moderate fruity fragrance.

Native Range

Rosa 'Autumn Sunset' is a hybrid of garden origin, bred by Loren Liming, introduced 1986.

Suggested Uses

Planted as a large shrub, trained on fences or pillars, or allowed to arch naturally at 5-6 foot (1.5-1.8 m) spacing. Warm apricot-gold to peachy-orange. Repeat-blooming. Vigorous (6-10 feet). Above-average disease resistance. Not suitable for small spaces.

How to Identify

Distinguished from 'Buff Beauty' by the larger plant size (6-10 feet versus 5-6 feet) and the warmer, more orange-toned apricot (versus softer buff). Distinguished from 'Crown Princess Margareta' by the more open, semi-double (versus fully double rosette) flower form. Distinguished from 'Adélaide d''Orléans' by the repeat bloom (versus once-blooming). A vigorous warm-toned apricot-gold—larger and more orange than 'Buff Beauty', repeat-blooming.
