Melaleuca armillaris
bracelet honey-myrtle
Overview
Melaleuca armillaris is an evergreen shrub or small tree reaching 10-25 feet (3-8 m) tall and 8-15 feet (2.5-4.5 m) wide, with a rounded to weeping crown and pale grey, papery bark that peels in strips. The leaves are narrow and needle-like, 0.4-1 inch (10-25 mm) long, mid- to dark green, and arranged spirally along arching branchlets. White to cream flowers are packed into cylindrical spikes 1.2-3 inches (3-8 cm) long that resemble a bottlebrush, with the stamens forming the visible part of each flower. Flowering occurs mainly in spring and early summer, with lighter bloom at other times. Woody seed capsules persist in clusters along the older stems for several years. Plants can add 12-24 inches (30-60 cm) of height per year when young and tolerate wind, salt spray, and dry periods once established. The arching outer branches can sweep the ground on open-grown specimens. The species grows on coastal cliffs, dunes, and rocky sites, and is widely planted as a windbreak and screen.
Native Range
Native to southeastern Australia, on the coast and nearby ranges of New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Grows on cliffs, dunes, rocky headlands, and estuary margins, tolerating exposure to salt-laden wind.Suggested Uses
Planted as a windbreak, screen, or clipped hedge in coastal and inland gardens, spaced 6-10 feet (1.8-3 m) apart. Used for erosion control on exposed sites and as habitat for nectar-feeding birds. Its self-seeding limits use near native bushland. How to Identify

Care & Maintenance
Care Guide
Grows in full sun on most soils, including sand, clay, and limestone, and tolerates both dry and seasonally wet ground. Establishes with occasional water in the first year, after which it withstands drought, wind, and coastal salt. It is frost-hardy to about 25 F (-4 C). Older plants can become open at the base as the canopy lifts. It can self-seed into bushland and is regarded as a weed outside its native range. The shrub reshoots from old wood after hard cutting.Pruning
Tolerates regular trimming and is clipped as a hedge or screen, cut after the main flowering. Hard pruning into old wood produces fresh shoots, unlike many shrubs. Light annual trimming keeps the crown dense and limits seed set.Pruning Schedule
