Overview

Liriope muscari 'Monroe White' is the white-flowered form of lilyturf, growing 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) tall and wide. Pure white flowers in dense grape-hyacinth-like spikes appear in August and September — brightening shaded areas where the violet-blue of 'Big Blue' might not read as well. The white spikes are more visible in deep shade than purple ones. Same extreme adaptability as 'Big Blue': any light level, any soil, drought-tolerant, heat-tolerant. The white and blue forms can be alternated for a two-tone liriope edging. Same clumping habit, evergreen foliage, and annual shearing requirement. Dark berries follow the flowers. Mildly toxic. Deer avoid the foliage.

Native Range

The species Liriope muscari is native to China, Japan, and Taiwan. 'Monroe White' is a garden selection for white flower color.

Suggested Uses

Used alongside 'Big Blue' for a two-tone edging, in deep shade where white reads better than purple, and in all the same applications as 'Big Blue'. The white alternative for brightening dark areas.

How to Identify

Identified by pure white grape-hyacinth-like flower spikes among dark green arching glossy evergreen foliage. The white color distinguishes this from the violet-blue 'Big Blue'. Same clumping habit and grape-hyacinth spike form.
