Overview

Hydrangea paniculata 'Quick Fire' is a panicle hydrangea, growing 72–96 inches (180–240 cm) tall and 72–96 inches (180–240 cm) wide. Cone-shaped flower panicles 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) open white in early summer and age through pink to deep pink-red as the season progresses — the color change is age-dependent and not affected by soil pH (unlike H. macrophylla, where soil pH determines blue vs. pink). Blooms 2–4 weeks earlier than standard panicle cultivars such as H. paniculata 'Limelight'. Key species differences from H. macrophylla: (1) cone-shaped panicles, not round mopheads; (2) blooms on new (current-season) wood only — prune hard in late winter without removing flower buds; (3) full sun tolerant (6+ hours); (4) zone 3 hardy (vs. zone 5 for H. macrophylla). The dried flower panicles persist into winter on the stems and gradually fade to tan. Mildly toxic if ingested (cyanogenic glycosides in leaves). Zones 3–8. Tolerates a wider range of soil pH than H. macrophylla. Drought-tolerant once established compared to H. macrophylla, though consistent moisture improves bloom size. Japanese beetles feed on the foliage. Powdery mildew in humid stagnant conditions.
