Overview

Hemerocallis 'Siloam Double Classic' is a compact, clumping, deciduous perennial reaching 16-20 inches (40-50 cm) tall with a spread of 18-24 inches (45-60 cm). The cultivar produces fully double flowers 5 inches (13 cm) across in soft peach-pink to salmon-pink; extra petaloid stamens replace the central reproductive parts and create a layered, peony-like form with ruffled margins. Each flower lasts one day, and bloom extends from June through July for 4-5 weeks—a shorter season than single-flowered daylily cultivars. The arching, strap-shaped, medium green foliage reaches 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) before scapes emerge. Well-branched scapes carry 15-20 buds per stem. In cool, cloudy weather the double expression can be incomplete and some flowers open partially single. Registered by Pauline Henry in 1985. Growth rate is moderate and clumps reach mature size in 1-2 years. Hardy to USDA zone 3. All plant parts are toxic if ingested by cats and dogs.

Native Range

Hemerocallis 'Siloam Double Classic' is a garden hybrid registered by Pauline Henry in 1985. The genus Hemerocallis is native to eastern Asia (China, Japan, Korea, and eastern Russia), where wild species grow in meadows, forest edges, and mountain slopes.

Suggested Uses

Used in front-of-border positions, edging, and container plantings of at least 2 gallons (7.5 L), at 18-24 inch (45-60 cm) spacing. The 16-20 inch (40-50 cm) mature height suits small spaces where taller daylilies would dominate. The double peony-like flower form contrasts with single-flowered daylily cultivars in a mixed planting. The 4-5 week bloom window and incomplete double expression in cool weather are trade-offs against single-flowered cultivars with longer and more reliable bloom.

How to Identify

Identified by the fully double, peony-like flower form with layered petaloid stamens at 5 inches (13 cm) across, in soft peach-pink to salmon-pink. Compared with single-flowered pink cultivars such as H. 'Janice Brown', this has visibly doubled flower structure rather than six-petal single form and a softer peach-pink rather than bright rose-pink. The compact 16-20 inch (40-50 cm) scape height separates it from taller pink double daylilies.

Care & Maintenance

Care Guide

Grows in full sun and average to moist, well-drained soil at pH 6.0-7.0. Hardy to USDA zone 3. The double flower form can open incompletely in cool, cloudy weather, producing partially single flowers in poor summer conditions. Clumps benefit from division every 3-5 years to maintain bloom. The compact 16-20 inch (40-50 cm) height suits front-of-border and container positions. Water weekly during extended dry periods; established plants tolerate short drought.

Pruning

Cut spent flower scapes at the base after all buds have opened. Remove frost-killed foliage in late fall or leave standing until early spring. Divide crowded clumps every 3-5 years in early spring or after bloom.
