Overview

Epipremnum aureum 'N''Joy' is a white-patched pothos, trailing or climbing 36–72 inches (90–180 cm). Green heart-shaped leaves 2–3 inches (5–7 cm) long with sharply defined pure white sectors — the white areas form solid blocks or patches rather than the diffuse speckled marbling of E. aureum 'Marble Queen'. Leaf size is smaller than standard E. aureum cultivars such as 'Golden' or 'Jade.' The reduced chlorophyll in the white sectors results in slower growth than solid-green cultivars. Brighter indirect light (200–400 foot-candles) maintains the white patches; low light shifts new leaves toward more green coverage. Stems that revert to solid green should be removed — reverted growth outcompetes variegated shoots. Trailing stems root at nodes on contact with moist surfaces. Propagates from single-node stem cuttings in water within 2–3 weeks. Toxic to cats and dogs (calcium oxalate raphides). Native to Mo'orea, French Polynesia (the species). Overwatering in low light causes root rot; allow the top inch (2.5 cm) to dry between waterings. Humidity above 40% prevents brown edges on the white leaf sections.

Native Range

The species is native to French Polynesia. 'N'Joy' is a sharply white-variegated selection.

Suggested Uses

Grown in hanging baskets, on shelves, or climbing a moss pole in containers of 1–2 gallons (4–8 liters). The smaller leaf size suits tight spaces and terrariums. Toxic to cats and dogs.

How to Identify

Identified by green heart-shaped leaves with sharply defined pure white sectors (solid blocks, not marbled). Distinguished from 'Marble Queen' (diffuse speckled marbling throughout) by the clearly delineated white-and-green block pattern. Smaller leaves than other E. aureum cultivars.

Care & Maintenance

Care Guide

Bright indirect light maintains white areas; low light causes greening. Allow the top inch (2.5 cm) to dry between waterings. Remove solid-green reverted stems. Smaller-leaved and slower-growing than standard pothos. Toxic to cats and dogs (calcium oxalate).

Pruning

Trim trailing stems to desired length. Remove solid-green reverted stems to preserve variegation. Stem cuttings with a node root in water within 2–3 weeks.
